Unwelcome Visitors

We all get little critters in our houses that we would rather not see. In Vietnam, I've seen my fair share of large spiders, little ants, and even some cockroaches, but nothing that really made me jump on top of the furniture....until recently. My new apartment is on the second floor of an old, traditional style Vietnamese house. You would think that not too many critters would come up here, but I have been getting the grandfather of all cockroaches since I moved in here. I'm not particularly bothered by roaches, but these are seriously of epic size. It took 4 good crunches (they really crunch when you smack them) with a tennis shoe to kill one of these guys. My sister is terrified of roaches, so I didn't flush one that I killed because I was Skyping with her soon and wanted to show it to her. When I went to show it on the computer, it turned out he was still moving! So even 4 crunches didn't fully work! This picture in no way does the size of these things justice, but below is a shot of my latest conquest, which brings it to Molly - 4, cockroaches - 0. :-)

I also found this pretty butterfly/moth outside my apartment the other day. It also is huge, which you can't really tell from the picture. He is not unwanted because hopefully he'll eat the other bugs, and maybe even the cockroaches!

He was longer than my index finger!

Up close shot.

Those slats are about a foot apart, which
helps give you an idea about his size.

  1. Wow! They are huge! I don't think I've ever seen a butterfly/moth that large! I'm not really that squeamish about bugs, but I don't think I'd like a cockroach that size in the house!

  2. OMG that cockroach is hideous! I would be going through Raid like crazy. Please tell me they don't eat those things over there. If they do, just don't tell me, because it probably means I unknowingly ate some while I was there!

Kozi thinks the moth is cool. I can't believe it's that big!
